Septoplasty
The following instructions will help you know what to expect in the days following surgery.
ActivitiesAfter your surgery you should rest for several days. Light activities may be resumed after 7 days. Strenuous physical activity is discouraged for 2 weeks. Avoid blowing you nose for 7 days. After this, you may start to gently blow. Sneeze with your mouth open for 5-7 days You may bathe the day after surgery
DietResume normal diet as tolerated
PainMost people will have mild to moderate pain for a few days after surgery. Acetaminophen (Tylenol ®) and ibuprofen (Advil ®) can be used to relieve any discomfort. If additional medication was prescribed, use only as directed and if necessary, after using acetaminophen/ibuprofen. It is normal for your nose to be tender for up to 6-8 weeks after surgery.
Care after Surgery Drainage: bloody drainage is expected after nasal surgery. If there is significant bright red blood (soaking through a sponge in less than 15 minutes), gentle pressure to the front of the nose for 20 minutes without peaking often will stop most bleeding. If it continues, you should go to your nearest Emergency Department. Rinsing: After surgery, you should use a saline mist or spray (such as Hydrasense or Salinex) at least three times per day for 2 weeks. Do not use any nasal steroid sprays for 2 weeks. Nasal Congestion: A stuffy nose is normal following surgery due to swelling of the tissues. This may last a few weeks after surgery. A humidifier may help alleviate some of this congestion as will sleeping with your head slightly elevated.
Please contact the office or proceed to the nearest Emergency room if you experience:Brisk nose bleeding that does not stop with gentle pressure FeverPurulent discharge (pus) coming from the noseSevere nasal pain or headache
